Interactive Installation
Within a stone circle in a sea of stars, Soniferous Eden; a rich and dynamic soundscape generating from lush groves of plants, relating the touch and presence of the captivated humans walking amongst them.

For over one hundred years, a multitude of visionary scientists from across the globe have found themselves suddenly impassioned by research in the field of plant & man bio- communication. A devotion usually initiated from accidental revelations in pursuits as diverse as finding an biological anti-jamming missile paste to the quest for interstellar communication, these experiments all have verified a measurable reaction in plants to human and other organic activity.

With the incorporation of dedicated hardware to harness both GSR and EEG (bio-electrical) signals, Mileece’s interactive plant software, written in Super Collider (an open-source audio programming language), analyzes and allocates plant bio-emissions to generate the most minute elements of harmonically oriented sound design. Through this delicate balance between data and sound, or what she terms as ‘aesthetic sonification*’, plant and man’s true interaction is revealed through the mutual perception of sound.

Walking barefooted in the moist soil of this enchanting environment, we are reminded of our intimate and invaluable connection with Plants, a source of our life on this planet.
Soniferous Earth was originally commissioned by BOX Foundation, the EDS Innovation Center at the LSE, London and has since been presented at a variety of prestigious museums and festivals across Europe.

*sonification is the replay of data through sound
